In the winter of 2018, Flanders’ tv audience got a real treat with the long-awaited fiction series Over Water.
In season 1 of Over Water, former television star John Beckers is given one last chance to get his life back on track. Laid off his addiction to booze and gambling, he eagerly takes on a new role in the port of Antwerp in his father-in-law’s company of container transport. Despite his good intentions, Beckers makes nothing but wrong choices, gradually becoming the kingpin of the highly lucrative but dangerous cocaine trafficking in the docks of the port. Season 2 starts off when John leaves prison and he finds himself in a world that has changed a lot. He got clean in prison but his new addiction takes over: power. When he gets asked to run the company of his former competitor, he rises in the criminal hierarchy.
The show is carried by a very talented team. It’s written by Tom Lenaerts and Paul Baeten, and it stars some of Flanders’ finest actors such as Tom Dewispelaere, Tom Van Dyck, Natali Broods, Ruth Becquart, Kevin Janssens and Jeroen Perceval. For season 2, Stijn Van Opstal, Tiny Bertels, Chris Nietvelt and Bruno Vanden Broecke are added to this widely acclaimed cast.
Set against the raw background of the port of Antwerp, accompanied by a mesmerising soundtrack, Over Water is an ingeniously edited psychological drama series with standout acting performances. Months before the release, there already was a real buzz about this universal story, both in Belgium and abroad.
You can re-watch the entire series on Netflix.
